Madrean Archipelago Biodiversity Assessment

Project Managers: Sky Island Alliance
Sky Island Alliance's MABA project is a visionary initiative to catalog, protect, and restore one of the world's premier biodiversity hotspots. Over the next few years we will inventory the wildlands and wildlife of the Sonoran Sky Islands — a region of incredible biological wealth — while implementing community-based conservation, restoration and education activities that are key to the integrity of natural and human environments.

    Research Checklists

Research checklists are pre-compiled by floristic scientists. This is a very controlled method of building a species list, which allows for specific specimens to be linked to the checklist to serve as vouchers. Vouchers are proof that the species actually occurs in the given area. If there is any doubt, one can inspect these specimens for verification or make annotations to the identification when necessary.

      Public Survey Checklists

Public Survey Checklists are defined through the linkage of species occurrences to a survey project name. This method allow biological surveys to be conduced through group participation. If a team member comes across a new species, they document the occurrence through a specimen collecton or a photo observation. Linking the observation to a survey project automatically adds the species to the checklist. Verification procedures ensure that observations are expert reviewed and identified correctly. The annotation of the misidentified specimen will automatically adjust the species.
